Sweet Corn at The Fair Grove Farmers' Market 2011

The Fair Grove Farmers' arrival of Fresh Corn on the Cob will be Wednesday July 20TH, along with Local Honey, Blackberries and Fresh Peaches. We look forward to the Corn every year.
It is a true sign that Summer is here, along with the heat. Jack Brooks goes to a great deal to get the corn to the Market, with his electric fences to try and keep out the raccoons , and with the extreme heat trying to keep his crops watered. The Fair Grove Farmers' Market vendors take great pride in the produce they bring to the market for the customers.
They work hard at the produce they bring every week. The local honey is truly local.
We are a grower producer only market and we are very proud of that fact.
Jerry Sutherland will be at the market with large sweet candy onions.
Becky Roark with the Family Nutrition Education Program from the Univ. of Missouri Extension will be at the Market handing out free information on family nutrition.

Pleasant Hope, MO) -- It's the season for summer fruits and vegetables, and no one knows that better than a young lady from Pleasant Hope.
With her own business, and a flair for salesmanship that has customers coming back for seconds, she's on her way to one sweet career.
Just try keeping 6-year-old Chloe Gertner out of the family garden.
"She is an outdoor child," says Stacy Gertner, Chloe's mother. "She loves to be outside."
Stacy recognized her daughter's green thumb last summer when basil leaves caught her eye.
"We got to the point where she wanted to be the one that picked it, and she just got a bowl and would go pick me a bowl full of basil and finally she said, 'I want my own.'"
Her ever-growing harvest gave Chloe an idea -- a business plan -- to help finance her fancy lifestyle.
"What will you do with the money?" Joy asks.
"Go to Sea World," responds Chloe.
"How much money do you need to go to Sea World?"
"I don't know," says Chloe.
So with a little help from mom, and her baby sister, Chloe inventories, packages, and takes her goods to market -- the Fair Grove Farmers' Market.
Chloe tempts customers with samples of tomato basil soup and plenty of spoons.
If you think her sales pitch is a little soft, just try saying no.
"Would you like to try my soup?" Chloe asks potential customers.
"The soup was awesome," critiques a young customer. "Only two words to describe it: epic and awesome."
Customers can't get enough. Thus far, neither can Chloe.
"$22 dollars is what you're up to," Stacy tells Chloe.
"She wants to know if that's enough to go already. I told her not quite yet."
Undaunted, Chloe expands her sales territory and reaffirms her commitment.
"They gave her a free plant at the farmers' market, so that really got her interested in planting and taking care of things," says Stacy.
It's called Growing with Kids. And just watch her grow.
"Altogether you have made $35," says mom Stacy at the end of the day.
"Is that enough to go to Sea World?" asks Chloe.
"Not quite yet," replies her mother. "You need a little bit more."
Chloe sells three varieties of basil -- sweet, lemon and cinnamon -- every Wednesday at the Fair Grove Farmers' Market.

Larry and Josephine Dowell has won this award!
The Fair Grove Farmers' Market has a growing with Kids Club, we have 345 kids in the Club, each week the kids come to our Market for 6 weeks and get free plants or Seeds to grow there own garden.For 7 years we have had the privilege of having 2 Master Gardeners at our market that set up and hand out the plants or seeds and gives them advice on how to grow there own garden. They are a retired couple that donate there time every week for this award winning kids club.Larry Dowell is a Retired Dr. and his wife Josephine is a retired nurse. This year they will be awarded Champion of the Year from the MFA and The Agri Mo for the State of MO.
We have a special vendor Cloe Gertner that is 7 years old that will be selling her fresh basil she has grown herself. Chloe is a member of the Growing with kids club. She has been a member for 4 years.From the advice and encouragement from The Dowells Chloe has learned how to grow her own garden, at 7 years old.And know she will be learning the business skills of selling her own produce. How to be self productive in this day and age at a early age is so important.Our Market strives on our Children.The Dowells have gone above and beyond and have made a positive impact to The Fair Grove Farmers' Market and to the community.To help raise awareness of the importance of Eating Healthy food and to be self producing.And to strive to the parents the importance of not raising a couch potato but to teach kids to raise a real potato from there own garden. And how 2 people can make a difference in our children's life Like the Dowells.

Shane Schoeller our 139 State Rep and pro team speaker presented the Dowells with a House Resolution.

Barb Pate a registered nurse and one of our Market Vendors took blood pressure and talked to the customers on the best way to help lower your blood pressure with healthy eating habits.

Market Lady Visits the Fair Grove Farmers' Market on May 18
Monday, May 16, 2011 – SPRINGFIELD, MO. – The Market Lady, Lane McConnell, will visit the Fair Grove Farmers' Market in Fair Grove, Mo., on Wednesday, May 18. The Market Lady and video crew will begin at 3:30 p.m., with two cooking demonstrations incorporating products from the market.
“Our market is so excited about The Market Lady visiting this week,” said Fair Grove Farmers' Market Manager Debra VanBenthusen. “Eating fresh from the market is simple and healthy and The Market Lady will be cooking two delicious meals at the market to show consumers ways to incorporate fresh products from the market.”
One recipe The Market Lady will be preparing at the market is a Grilled Vidalia Onion & Tomato Dip. Below find the recipe for printing in your publication.
Be sure and come out the Fair Grove Farmers Market, located just off Highway 65 in Fair Grove, Mo., from 3:30 p.m.
Grilled Vidalia Onion & Tomato Dip
6 ripe Roma Tomatoes
2 Tablespoons olive oil
Kosher salt, to taste
1 large Vidalia onion
1 cup sour cream
4 ounces cream cheese, softened
3 Tablespoons mayonnaise
1/4 cup finely shredded fresh basil leaves
Dash hot pepper sauce, to tasteCut tomatoes in half lengthwise. Brush with olive oil and sprinkle the cut sides lightly with salt. Peel the onion and cut into 4 or 5 thick lengthwise slices. Brush with olive oil. Grill vegetables on a hot grill until tomatoes are cooked and soften slightly. Turn only once. Grill onion slices until lightly browned on the edges, but still crisp-tender. Remove and cool.
Slide tomato skins off. Chop tomatoes and onions and blend together. Whisk together sour cream, cream cheese and mayonnaise. Fold in vegetable mixture along with the basil. Season to taste with hot pepper sauce. May be served immediately or cover and chilled until ready to serve.

A little about Just Desserts . . .

I love to bake! My husband loves to bake! I can’t remember when I first wanted to be a pastry chef, but about 35 years ago I went on a crusade to make the BEST pie ever when I heard a certain young fella say that Dutch Apple Pie was his favorite dessert in the whole world! (What’s that saying, “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach”?) Well, the young man and I didn’t last, but my love affair with baking did. Ten years ago, I met and married my husband, Chuck, who retired from the Navy after 20 years, and, you’ll never guess …Chuck loves to cook! In fact, Chuck is the creator of one of our signature recipes that I call Chuck’s World Famous Coffee Cake, which we make into hundreds of muffins and bundt cakes every year.

In previous restaurant work, I had cooked for vegans and vegetarians and folks on special diets. In 2008 I was hired at the Developmental Center of the Ozarks (DCO) where I learned about the dietary needs of some very special young people. Gluten-Free diets are encouraged when dealing with ADHD and the Autism spectrum, IBS and other digestive diseases and conditions, such as Celiac disease. Being a Type 2 diabetic, I have a personal interest in working with sugar-free baked goods that taste as good as the “real” thing. My ‘taste-testers’ are a group of friends that consist of vegetarians and meat-eaters, folks with Celiac disease and diabetes, and those who just love good food. We all taste everything new that I make to be sure every baked good that we market is delicious and flavorful…and I never have to worry about leftovers!

We work out of our “lab” (my home kitchen) located in Springfield, where we continue to adhere to sanitation and health department regulations and guidelines to insure our products are fresh and free from any contaminants. We use a dedicated pantry, bake ware, and cooking utensils to make certain no cross-contamination of wheat flour can occur when baking our gluten-free products. (We don’t use barley or spelt). We try to reserve one day a week for baking gluten-free to further guarantee no cross-contamination.

We love to fill the kitchen with the aroma of fresh baked fruits from our pies; the butter, cinnamon and toasted nut flavor of Chuck’s coffee cake; the comforting smell of a freshly baked cake. My joy is in prepping the apples, carrots and other fruits and veggies that go into carrot cakes and gluten-free Morning Glory muffins. We love to inhale the mouth-watering smell of warm chocolate when it follows us out the front door from a freshly baked batch of cookies! We’re proud of the awesome gifts of “lovin’ from the oven” our candycakes make when someone needs a ‘thank you’ or birthday gift. (Miniature cakes dipped in chocolate that look as good as they taste, in case you haven’t had the pleasure.) And what could be better than the wholesome, healthy smell of freshly squeezed, sliced or crushed lemons and oranges, being readied to go into a cake, pie, scone or cookie recipe?

Opening Day Starts out Sweet for 2011

Wednesday April 20TH is Opening day of the Fair Grove Farmers' Market, consumers will find plenty of flowers blooming as several of the farmers are bringing bedding plants, house plants and vegetable starts. Also available will be lettuces, spinach, mustard, kale, radishes and other cole crops, some jams, bakery items, fresh farm eggs, birdhouses, soaps and lotions,pottery, Rain Barrles,plus a surprise or two. The Growing with Kids program Starts out with Free Tree's Wednesday, Then at the end of June Jennifer Farr, will have a pottery class for the kids. Jennifer Farr has pottery at the Market every week, Jennifer makes and designs her own Pottery. Jennifer works out of her own studio in Marshfield. 2011 Fair Grove Farmers' Market Season will Start Strong

The Fair Grove Farmers' Markets 12TH year, Starts on Wednesday April 20TH at 3:30 PM till 7:00 PM. Hwy 125 & Main Street, Fair Grove, MO 417-459-9734 This year We will have 2 new Vendors, Mindy Collins from Fair Grove with lots of baked goods, Paul Henry of Springfield with fresh cut flowers along with some produce. The Market will have a wide variety of bedding plants this season. We are hoping for some tomatoes on opening day, so be sure and watch for updates on our website at http://www.fairgrovefarmersmarket.com/ or you can follow us on face book as well as our blog. The kids club will start on April 20Th, this is free to the Kids, for 8 weeks they will get a plant or seeds and they can learn how to grow there own garden. 4/20 Trees, 4/2 Cabbage/ cauliflower plants, 5/4 Seeds, 5/11 Tomato plants, 5/18 Seeds, 5/25 Basil plants, 6/1Cucumber/squash plants, 6/8 Flowering plants Martha Weeks of Iron wood Green House, from Fair Grove has put together and and started the plants for the Kids Club. Martha has expanded her green houses last fall and will have a bigger a wider selection of starter and flowing plants this season at the Fair Grove Farmers' Market. We are in the planning stages for other activities through out the season for the kids, so be sure and check back for updates. The Fair Grove Farmers' Market will be involved in The Market Lady project . They will be doing cooking demos, interviews with consumers and the market vendors while visiting the market. They plan on filming three segments to be used during market season. This will be shown on KY3. Watch for the dates on the markets website or on the Bulletin Board at the Market. The Fair Grove Library will be a story telling time at the Market the Last Wednesday of every month , from 4:30 till 5:30 rain or shine, so the kids can come and get a story read to them while you shop. Then on May 11TH and 18TH The Shrine unit will be at the Market Selling there Vidalia Sweet Onions they are the Keystone Kops Unit from Fair Grove. They will have Kops and Konvicts dressed in their uniforms having fun with the kids. We are so excited about this years season, last year was a challenge with the rain almost every Wednesday, but we are at the Market selling Rain or Shine. Our vendors have stepped up there production this winter so they can offer you a wider and a large selection of there produce. We accept EBT(food Stamp Cards) as well as Debit. EAT FRESH, BUY LOCAL, STAY HEALTHY The Market will have 8 vendors at the Fair Grove Business expo so be sure and stop by our booth. We will have some radishes, spinach, lettuce and a few other produce items for sale. And be sure and buy a Fair Grove Farmers' Market T-shirt and wear it to the market on opening day for a free hot dog. Breakfast with Fresh Veggies and Eggs

9 small potatoes, sliced 1/4-inch thick
2 tablespoons cooking oil
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
4 ounces fresh mushrooms, sliced
1 cup chopped salami or cooked ham/or cooked bacon bites
1 small green sweet pepper, chopped
1/2 cup chopped onion
10 eggs, lightly beaten or 2-1/2 cups refrigerated egg product
1/4 cup milk
2 tablespoons snipped parsley
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (4 ounces)

1. Cook potatoes in boiling water about 10 minutes or until just tender. Drain well.
2. In a 12-inch skillet, cook the potatoes in hot oil over medium-high heat for 5 to 8 minutes or until browned, turning occasionally.
3. Add the butter or margarine to the skillet. Add the mushrooms, salami or ham, green pepper, and onion. Cook and stir for 5 to 8 minutes or until the vegetables are just tender.
4. Combine the eggs with the milk and parsley. Season with salt and black pepper. Add to skillet. Reduce heat to medium. Cook, stirring occasionally, until eggs are just set but still moist.
5. Sprinkle with cheese. Cover and cook, without stirring, for 3 minutes more or until eggs are set in the center. Serve hot with toasted bagels or English muffins, if you like. Makes 8 to 10 servings.

All of us here at The Fair Grove Farmers' Market would like to wish you All a Very Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year!

This year proved to be rather challenging for our customers as well as for our vendors.
The biggest challenge was the rain. Rain oh yes guaranteed to be on Wednesdays in Fair Grove.
You did not have to be a weather man to no if there was going to be rain it would be here.

Since our market is open rain or shine our vendors were there as well as the dedicated customers.

We even lost power one week, and of course that was the week we had the High Hopes Blue Grass Band playing for us, the show went on.

We prevailed and had a great season.

We are in the planning stages of the 2011 season , we are going to have a community garden for the kids at the mill, and the lions club is adding on to the pavilion.

Baker Creek Seeds as already sent their donation of seeds for the growing with kids club.

2011 Season is looking to be one of the Best seasons for Fair Grove.

MISSI'S Pumpkin pie From The Fair Grove Farmers Market Blog 2010

MISSI'S Pumpkin pie

INGREDIENTS

1 small pumpkin (cooked and pureed to make 4 cups)
1 cup sugar
1 Tablespoon pumpkin pie spice
1 1/2 cans of evaporated milk (12 oz.)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
4 large eggs

Cut pumpkin in half-long ways and remove all the seeds and stringy stuff. I use a big ice cream scoop. Wash and place in a microwaveable bowl. Put 2 inches of water in the bowl and cover with lid. Cook the pumpkin in the microwave for 20 to 25 minutes.The pumpkin should spoon off its' rind easily and in big chunks. Put it directly into your blender and make the pumpkin into a puree.

Combine all the above ingredients and mix with a hand mixer until it is well blended and a little frothy. The mixture will be thin. Pour into two deep dish 9 inch pie crusts.

Bake at 425 for 15 minutes then reduce the heat to 375 and bake 45 to 60 minutes more. Also, I use tin foil around the edges of my pies to keep the crust from burning.

This is the best pie our family has ever had.I think the difference is using the fresh pumpkin. I guarantee it is worth the work and time it takes! Good Luck!!

Fair Grove Farmers' Market Scalloped Corn for The Holidays By Debra VanBenthusen

Welcome to our Blog.
Here I have My favorite recipe just in time for the Holidays, and for any dinner.
My name is Debra VanBenthusen.
I started the Fair Grove Farmers Market 7
years ago as a vendor selling gourd bird houses and cinnamon jelly.
I now offer home made zucchini bread, pumpkin bread, cinnamon jelly, and sometimes pecan rolls.
Along with my gourd bird houses. I raise the gourds myself.
I'm the Market Manager know going into the 4Th year.
This is the best community and Market in the State.
You get a hometown feeling when you visit our market.
My passion is in cooking, growing gourds, fishing, and the great outdoors,
and spending time with my family. And managing the Farmers Market and meeting and talking to people.
I met the Love of my life 10 years ago and moved here to the Ozark's.
The green peppers and the red peppers along with the paprika give this dish a true holiday color.

Scalloped Corn

Ingredients
1(15 ounce) can creamed corn
15 oz of fresh corn off the Cob or frozen corn
2 eggs Beat eggs in a bowl with a fork until frothy
1 Teaspoon of sugar
1/4 cup of Fresh Green Pepper diced small
1/4cup Fresh heirloom sweet yellow and sweet red pepper diced small
1/4 cup of diced up fresh onion
2 1/2 cups crushed saltine crackers
1 cup melted butter reserve 1/2 of the butter
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Butter one 8x11x2 inch casserole dish.
In a medium sized mixing bowl, combine the creamed corn and fresh corn, eggs, peppers, onion,1/4 cup of the melted butter and 1/2 of the cracker crumbs. Pour mixture in into the prepared dish.
In a small bowl, mix the remaining melted butter, cracker crumbs.
Sprinkle crumb topping over the casserole. then sprinkle the paprika and pepper.on the top of the cracker crumbs.
Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 40 to 60 minutes, until topping browns slightly and corn is bubbly around the edges.

As a child I always helped my parents in the garden. I have always had Gardens where I live and after retirement more gardens. After retirement was when I got interested in the Farmers market. I have been selling at the Market for 7 years. We have excellent management , vendors and buyers . My goal is to keep supplying produce the buyers want.

Every Wednesday Gene sets the Market Sign along the Highway to remind people of The Market that day.

Genes Favorite summer recipes:

SUMMER SALAD
2 CUCUMBERS
2 LARGE TOMATOES
1 LARGE GREEN PEPPER
1 MEDIUM ONION ( OR 5 GREEN ONIONS)
CUT AND DICE THE ABOVE ( A LOT MORE VEGGIES MAY BE ADDED)

DRESSING
1/3 CUP OIL
3 TABLESPOONS SUGAR
3 TABLESPOONS RED WINE VINEGAR
3/4 TSP. SALT
1/4 TSP PEPPER- MIX THE ABOVE WELL AND POUR OVER THE VEGGIES.
CHILL FOR SEVERAL HOURS.

MIXED VEGGIE CASSEROLE
ABOUT 6 CUPS OF COARSELY CHOPPED VEGETABLES, INCLUDING SQUASH,ONIONS, PEPPERS, CARROTS AND A FEW POTATOES. (IN WINTER TIME YOU CAN USE THE VEGGIES FROZEN-NOT THAWED)
1 CAN MUSHROOM SOUP
1/3 CUP SOUR CREAM
1 CUP SHREDDED CHEESE (I PREFER SHARP_
1 CAN ONION RINGS
MIX ALL THE ABOVE WITH 1/2 OF THE CHEESE AND ONION RINGS.
BAKE 30 MINUTES AT 350F. REMOVE FROM OVEN ADD REMAINDER 0F CHEESE AND ONION RINGS ON TOP OF CASSEROLE - BAKE AN ADDITIONAL 10 MINUTES.

BROCCOLI/CAULIFLOWER SALAD
CHOP 1 HEAD OF CAULIFLOWER AND ONE LARGE BUNCH OF BROCCOLI.
CHOP 1 MEDIUM ONION AND COVER WITH:
1/2 CUP SUGAR
1/2 CUP VINEGAR
1/2 CUP MAYONNAISE AND 1/2 CUP SOUR CREAM
1/2 TSP SALT.
MIX THE ABOVE WELL AND COVER VEGGIES.
CHILL SEVERAL HOURS

The Fair Grove Farmers' Market is ended for the 2010 Season. Our last day of the market was October 6TH, we had a paint your Gourd and pumpkin day for the kids. This was the 7Th year we had this for the kids. This was all free to the kids. We will have the growing with kids program in 2011. This is where the kids get free plants or seeds to grow there own garden. The seeds are donated from Baker Creek seeds out of Mansfield.
The Market T-shirts are available at the Family Pharmacy in Fair Grove for $10.00 or you can call Debra VanBenthusen at 417-459-9734 and she will meet you in Fair Grove to pick up your order, or she can mail them to you for a mailing fee of $5.00. If you want them mailed you can pay with your debit card when you place the order. You can also get customized Gift Certificate's for the 2011 season. With Christmas approaching what better way to show someone you love them with a Healthy Gift Certificate.
The Lions Club and the Historical Society are adding more space to the pavilion for the 2011 season. Remember to Eat Fresh--Buy Local--Stay Healthy.

The Heritage Reunion parade was great. The Market handed out Apples instead of candy to the Kids and the over whelming response was great! The kids all said yummy apples and the parents gave me a thumbs up.

The Rain did not Stop the High Hopes Blue Grass Band

The Show went on. The rain is haunting the Fair Grove Farmers' Market this Year.

When the band got there to set up we was with out power, that did not stop them.

They played and sang and had a great time. The customers and the vendors had a great time. They are really good and you can hear them at The Heritage reunion on the 26TH at the Mill on stage at 3P.M.

The 33rd Annual Fair Grove Heritage Reunion will be held Saturday, September 25, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, September 26, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., in Fair Grove, Missouri, located approximately 12 miles north of Springfield, just east of Highway 65, on Highway 125.You will find over 300 arts and crafts, food, and fundraising booths, along with a Saturday hometown parade and a Sunday church service. The event features country music, dancing, period entertainment from the 1800's, horse and mule obstacle course demonstrations, antique small engine, tractors, threshing, and lots of things to eat.Free admission. Several lots require a $3.00 fee for parking. Trolleys are available to take visitors to and from the outlying areas. Structures of interest include the Wommack Mill, Bell Hotel, Miller's Cabin, Blacksmith Cabin, Duke School House, Farm Machinery Museum and several restored buildings on the historic Fair Grove Square.For more information, call 417-759-2807.

The Fair Grove Farmers' Market has fall produce arriving in style, with pumpkins and watermelons, squash and cucumbers just to mention a few. The tomatoes are still arriving.
Local Honey, Fresh Angus Beef, Tortillas, Fresh Baked Pies and Jams and Jellies. And lots of baked items. Peaches are plentiful along with Apples.
Mark Your Calendar for On Sept 15Th the High Hopes Blue Grass Band will be playing at The Market.

The Rain Did not stop us

Customer appreciation day and The rain did not stop us at The Fair Grove Farmers' Market. We had a great turn out even in the rain.

The customers enjoyed samples from all the Vendors.

Steve VanBenthusen cooked up some pork chops on the grill with our family's pork chop rub. That I make and sell at the Market. This has been in our family for generations. It is a old dutch recipe.

The Blossers had some chicken and noodles made from there fresh noodles, this was a big hit.
The Grays had samples of all there jams and jellies.
Jack & Janet brooks had samples of there fresh tomatoes.

My cinnamon jelly is making it around the country. I had a couple stop at the market and bought 8 jars to take to his mom in Chicago. My cinnamon jelly is made with splenda and some made with sugar. That is a good feeling to no you make something out of the ordinary and unique that you can not find at a store. This is one of the great benefits of shopping at a Farmers' Market finding great things that you can not find any where else.

Fair Grove Customer Appreciation Sept 1ST 2010

Customer appreciation is Wednesday at the Fair Grove Farmers' Market.
Come and sample fresh produce along with Baked goods from your favorite vendor.
The pottery class is Wednesday all so for the 1st 20 kids, The cost is $10.00 per child.This a 3 week event. The 1st week they will create, 2ND week paint, 3rd week pick it up, the pottery will be fired and will be dishwasher safe.
The Fair Grove Bands Booster club will be at the Market selling Barb q Sauce for a fundraiser.
The pumpkins and watermelons are at the market as well as local honey.
A wide variety of produce at the Market. The Market has Safe Farm Fresh Eggs, Beef, coffee, and Baked goods. Along with fresh baked peach pies and a variety of other pies, from Shirley Allen of Fair Grove. Fresh Peaches and Pears.

Leah Cathro is at the Market with all sorts of Tortillas & Sopapillas.

Dr. Jon Hagler As Missouri’s twenty-first Director of Agriculture introduced Governor Jay Nixon and the First Lady to proclaim August as Farmers' Market Month in the State of Missouri.
Jim Gulick the President of the Missouri Farmers' Market association was there to receive the proclamation.

The Fair Grove Farmers' Market along with Shane Schoeller and Carl Buckner, presented a Basket of Fresh Produce and a Basket of Fresh Baked goods along with a few crafts and Coffee and Local Honey, along with a gift certificate for the Fair Grove Farmers' Market.

The First Lady is such a Sweet lady with such class and what a warm smile she has.

The Fair Grove Farmers' Market presented Shane Schoeller a basket of goodies for recognition for being our State Representative for our Great community of Fair Grove. If all the States had a Representative like Shane WOW.

The Fair Grove Farmers' Market has a wide variety of Produce, Beef, Coffee, tortillas,crafts, and lots of baked goodies. Along with Rain Barrels and dogie treats.
Jack and Janet Brooks are at the Market with Local Honey. Kids you need to get signed up for the pottery class to start on September 1St. There will be $10.00 per child, each child will create there own pottery creation and will paint it. This item will be dishwasher safe that you create. Come and sign up. This will be limited to 20 kids.
And all so if anyone has any information about the Cafe picnic table umbrellas please come forward and Help Locate them. These were donated by Coke a Cola for the customers to be able to sit in the shade and enjoy there dinner, at the Market Cafe. It is a shame that people can not respect other peoples property and they have to take stuff out of the cafe that does not belong to them. See The Market Manager for any information you might have. Also the Webb City market did conduct a “dot survey” . It’s was quick, easy, and – dare I say it? – fun. There are only four questions, each with several answers to choose from. We had 210 customers participate in the survey on Saturday and their responses told us that a majority (65%) of our Saturday customers travel 10 miles or less to the market, a quarter of our Saturday customers come to the market at least once a week while 33% of them come two or three times a month (19% were at the market for the very first time), most of our Saturday customers learned about the market through word of mouth, and most customers planned to spend $10 or more at the market.This information will provide a baseline for a grant project that the market submitted to the USDA’s specialty crop program. If we get the grant, and we think we will, the market will organize a publicity program for about 25 markets in south Missouri. It will provide a daily cooking show featuring one of the markets and a crop in season and will be aired on a Joplin television station and a Springfield television station. There will also be a major internet presence as part of the project. Webb City is providing the baseline information for the Joplin viewing area. I was at Fair Grove Wednesday doing the survey at their market to provide the baseline for the Springfield area. If we get the grant, we’ll conduct the surveys again next year at the two markets. A successful project will show increases in numbers of customers, in the amount spent by customers and in customers identifying television and the internet as their introduction to the markets. Grantors are big on hard data and this survey will give us a firm foundation on which to build our data, so I hope you will take three minutes today to participate.

The University of Missouri Extension for Greene County Family Nutrition Education Program have been at the Market for 3 weeks and will be there this week. Becky Roark and her helpers have been at the market handing out fliers on nutrition and activity pages for the children, they have handed out water bottles and last week they handed out measuring cups and cutting boards. Along with recipes for great nutrition.

You can sure smell it and boy is it good.
Our Market offers a wide variety of produce, bedding plants and fresh Angus beef as well.
We have farm fresh eggs, blue berries and blackberries and red raspberries.
fresh tomatoes, garlic, green beans, cucumbers.
The list goes on and on.
The market cafe uses all fresh produce from our vendors for hamburgers and his chicken wraps,
The hamburgers are fresh off the grill.

The Blosser's is a family owned business and they all work together.

They Joined the Fair Grove Market Last year. They bring all sorts of produce, plants and some baked items.

They brought the Best Smelling Rose bush to the Fair Groves Market, and of course I couldn't help myself from buying one.

And if you happen to drive by there place on a early morning you will see all the members of the family out in there garden weeding and planting.
Even the children help with the gardening .

Ty Williams (7) and Colby Williams(5)of Buffalo, Mo .Here they are selling their bounty of fresh radishes.
The Fair Grove Farmers' Market encourages kids to grow their own gardens with our growing with kids club. The Market is in its 6Th year of offering this to our kids for free. The free plants and seeds are handed out the first five weeks of the Market. But the advise from the Master Gardner's ( Larry and Josephine Dowell) are there all Season Long.

Here Larry and Josephine Dowell are handing out flowers to the kids, and giving advice to our customers.

With the help and support of Baker Creek Seeds of Seymour, and the Mo Dept. of conservation. They donate seeds every year to our program. And a special thanks to our vendors that raise plants to hand out to the Kids. Martha Weeks and John Lower, Rich Srch that help every year by donating plants for the program. The Market contributes to the vendors that help with the kids program.
The Market is in full swing with tomatoes and onions and strawberries just to name a few.

2010 Missouri Farmers’ Market of the Year Named in Fair Grove

(JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.) – At an event in Fair Grove, Mo. yesterday evening, Director of Agriculture Dr. Jon Hagler named the Fair Grove Farmers’ Market the state’s best in 2010 - an honor awarded each year to a farmers’ market that sets the example of adding value to their communities and connecting farmers to consumers through fresh, local foods. The Fair Grove Farmers’ Market was applauded for its youth programs, educational outreach and producer development efforts.

“The Fair Grove Farmers’ Markets exemplifies how to maintain a successful market, offer fresh, locally-grown produce and provide programs to reach out to youth and their community,” said Dr. Hagler. “Farmers’ markets provide an affordable option for consumers to get to know the folks who produce their food. In doing so, these markets place a high quality product on consumer’s tables and more dollars in the producer’s pockets which is beneficial to both farmers and consumers.”

Located under a pavilion at the historic Wommack Mill in downtown Fair Grove, the market entered its eleventh season last week. The market is open every Wednesday in 2010 through Oct. 6, from 3:30 until 7 p.m. A “growers only” market, all goods sold (including crafts) are required to be produced by the vendor presenting them.

In addition to locally-sourced foods, flowers and crafts for sale, the Fair Grove Farmers’ Market regularly provides entertainment and demonstrations. Food service is also available from the market’s certified kitchen and children can learn about gardening at the market’s “Growing with Kids” program.

“It is such an honor to be recognized as the finest farmers’ market in the state,” said Debra VanBenthusen, manager of Fair Grove Farmers’ Market. “The Market members have worked so hard in the past few years to increase the awareness and importance of farmers’ markets. This award means so much to our community.”

In addition to naming the Farmers’ Market of the Year, other Missouri farmers’ markets were recognized in a number of categories:

· Best Advertising/Marketing Campaign ‑ Fair Grove Farmers’ Market was recognized for its integrated use of print advertising, web content and direct marketing tactics, as well as original, creative artwork to promote the market.
· Best Photo ‑ Webb City Farmers’ Market won for visual documentation illustrating the importance of a farmers’ market to its patrons and community.
· Best Event – De Soto Farmers’ Market took statewide honors for “Meet Me at the Market,” an event that educated community participants on recycling, local foods and gardening.
· Champions of the Year ‑ Sue DeWitt of Marshfield Farmers’ Market and Pastor Darlene Payne of De Soto Farmers’ Market shared top individual recognition for dedicated service and commitment to their respective markets. DeWitt organized the Marshfield Farmers’ Market six years ago with only six vendors and now manages a market with more than 50 members. Described as an inspiration to vendors, patrons and the De Soto community, Payne was recognized for her positive and energetic approach.

Dr. Jon Hagler presented the 2010 Farmers' Market Award to our Market Wednesday The 28TH 2010.

This prestige award means so Much to all of us, and The community.
The community , the customers, the Vendors, have all shown such great pride in our Market. We are all so grateful that we have such a strong community.
Our Vendors strive to sell and make the best products, Our vendors Guarantee the produce and crafts and baked goods %100. We are a Growers only and producer only market.
I want to thank the community and All the Kids and the parents that take time out to bring them to the market each week.To the kids club, and a special thank you to Larry and Josephine Dowell for educating our kids. And the Mo Dept of Conservation and Baker Creek Seeds for there donations to our Market.
And I want to thank the vendors that are so easy to work with. You make my job fun, promoting and advertising.
And I'm so thankful for the Internet, and all the free websites , community calendars.I get on the Internet and it is like pulling weeds. We had Opfer Communications Inc. of Springfield, at the Market filming a commercial for a new product from the creator of the topsy turvy tomato planter. It is a Terrace Garden. Thanks to the great planning and all of the arrangements for this to happen.

Brandy Dittman is from Fair Grove and she is the production Assistant for Opfer Communication. Brandy contacted me a month ago about trying out one of the Terrace Gardens, and I said sure, and then she asked me about doing a commercial at the Fair Grove Farmers' Market. Brandy was excited, for the thought of being able to promote this great product, as well as promote our Great Community on a national televised commercial. The Terrace Garden is not at the Stores at this point. But when they do hit the stores, they will be flying off the Shelves.

Then we had Johnathan and Tessa Dowell playing the Dulcimers. What a treat. They are from New Mexico and come to visit their Mom and Dad and then they travel on to compete in dulcimer competitions in Arkansas, They will be back next year on opening day. So if you missed them this year mark your calendar for next years opening day April 20Th 2011.

We had free cookies and coffee for all the customers. The market had 2 great helpers that handed out the cookies and greeted our customers with free smiles.

Our Vendors have some produce green beans, radishes, lettuce just to name a few, and know's the time to get your garden plants and flowers from your local vendor.

Fair Grove Farmers’ Market

With opening day approaching and spring planting near, the Fair Grove Farmers’ Market is gearing up for a great start to the 2010 season. The Market will begin its 11th year of service to the community on April 21st, 2010. The hours will be from 3:30 P.M. until 7.00 P.M. each Wednesday through October 6, 2010.

Available items will include tomatoes and other produce, flowering and vegetable bedding plants, perennials, hanging baskets, fresh baked pies, brownies, cookies, bagels, jams, jellies, beef and eggs and more. Craft items will include rain barrels , soaps, and lotions just to mention a few.

Entertainment on opening day will be provided by Jonathan and Tessa Dowell from New Mexico, who will be playing their dulcimers. There will be a demonstration on how to grow your own terrace garden, by the makers of The Topsy Turvy, and they will also be filming a commercial for their new product called The Terrace Garden.

Again this year, the Market will promote the Growing With Kids program. Through this program children are encouraged to grow their own gardens and to get to know the enjoyment of growing their own food and the health benefits that come along with it.

The Missouri Department of Conservation has donated trees and Baker Creek Seeds has donated seeds to the Market for this purpose . Each week, during the first five weeks of the season, children will be given seeds and/or plants to take home with them to plant.

Baker Creek Seeds donated seeds to our growing with Kids Club for the 2ND year.
Our Market has a Growing with Kids club that is free to all the children. They get free plants or seeds to grow there own garden. This is all free. This will be our 5TH year.
We have 1 youth vendor that sells at our market.
Alex was one of the first members of our Kids club the first year we started the program. Alex is now growing and raising his own produce, and supplies his mom with tomatoes for her salsa.
Alex has won awards at State Fairs for his produce.
I went to baker creek seeds personally and was so impressed.

The Fair Grove Farmers' Market had our Meeting at Hilltop Pizza Febuary 27TH and we had a over whelming turn out.

Our market will be a Growers Only Market and Bakers Only. This means the vendor that is providing you with baked, or products grown or crafted will be from that vendor.

We had a guest Speaker Lane McConnell She is a Private market Consultant, and she talked to the vendors on how to improve sales at a Farmers' Market.
We had Tom Flowers from the Greene County Health Department to go over all Health Dept. Rules and regulations, and he answered all questions.
Justin Wagler a MSU Student will be designing for us a new Farmers Market Brouchure, and a opening day poster, and fliers for some special events for the 2010 season.

We want to Wish Ray and Jan Vanish good luck with there Business, they were are Egg Vendor.
They will not be returning to our Market.
Lori Greene will be bringing eggs to the market so we will still have those great farm fresh eggs there.

We want to welcome a new vendor that will be joining our market her name is Shirley Allen of Fair Grove.
She will be baking from scratch home made pies, and brownies, and no bake cookies, and cakes. And Apple Butter.

And The Pates will be bringing jams and jellies.

We will have a market table set up this year with market information, and customer complaint or comments forms you can fill out about our market.

Our Market will be doing home photo shoots this year so be sure and watch the blog and website of our vendors in action Baking and farming.

Then Brad and I was sure busy Wednesday the 4TH. We went to the School for their 1ST Benefit Health Fair, for all the Fair Grove School Staff. We had 2 tables set up with information about our Market as well as Fresh tomatoes from the Blossers Green House. I purchased store bought tomatoes and had them on hand to show people the difference. We handed out samples of the fresh tomatoes, to get everyone geared up for the first tomatoes of the season and to taste the difference. Then I had 2 store bought eggs and 2 farm fresh eggs with information about eggs, I had them cracked open on a plate to show the difference in the yolks. I gave out samples of my jelly to show people the difference between store bought and jelly from a farmers market. I had our banner hung up behind us.We had information about our opening day events as well as a list of all vendors, I had printed out information on eggs, as well as vegetable's and the benefits of honey and cinnamon and jams and jelly's. Brad had a poster board made up with, Did you Know.
The School required a $50.00 dollar door prize from each Business. Our Market Gave out (5) $5.00 gift cards and 5 AGRI MO shopping bags total $50.00. This way we was able to reach out to 10 people as winners instead of 1. And the $5.00 gift cards will benefit the winner's as well as the vendors.

And the event was from 1pm till 4pm.
I had book markers made up ( I made personally on my computer)and business cards to hand out. We handed out bumper stickers (No Farms No Food).
Brad and I was busy talking and promoting the Market, We was the busiest booth there.
Brad and I felt really good and thought it went really great.

We was asked to return next year.

PLEASE NOTE: The 2010 Fair Grove Area Chamber of Commerce Easter Egg hunt will immediately follow a benefit pancake breakfast being held earlier at Fair Grove Fire Station #2 on Shelby Road and Sunset to benefit Joey's House and the Nelson Family of Fair Grove. Additional donations to Joey's House will also be accepted on-site.
