FAIR GROVE FARMERS MARKET YOUTH WINS AT OZARK FAIR
FAIR GROVE FARMERS MARKET YOUTH WINS AT OZARK FAIR Eleven year old Alexander Schneider, the lone youth vendor at Farmers Market in Fair Grove, took some of his weekly produce offerings to the Ozark Empire Fair this year. The young gardener utilizes raised beds for growing his produce. This is his first time working with the Farmers Market, but his second year as a fair entrant. His favorite garden item is the Missouri heirloom purple podded pole bean, a string bean having a deep purple color on the vine but which turns green in boiling water. At the fair this year Schneider took second place with his beans, and earned a first place award for his Big Mama Italian tomatoes. Most of his garden produce is comprised of plants grown from seed obtained courtesy of Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds of Mansfield, Missouri. Adult vendors at the market also provide free and low cost plants to area youth, along with plenty of advice. Youth vendor Schneider spends as much time soliciting garden knowledge from adult vendors as he does selling at the market. Schneider moved up to the young adult open class at this year's fair, competing with entrants through age eighteen. Despite the sharp competition, the young gardener was awarded second place in the Super Gardener category, by demonstrating high quality varietal produce artfully displayed in a country basket. Additional awards included second place recognition for red onions, hot peppers, summer squash, and herbs. In addition to gardening, Schneider is a bird enthusiast and swept the awards with his waterfowl in the open fair division where he competed with entrants of all ages. He was awarded grand champion goose and grand champion meat duck, and received two first place ribbons for best Partridge Rock chickens. Schneider intends to expand future produce offerings at the market by building cold frames so that he can get an earlier start on the growing season. The Fair Grove Farmers Market is held every Wednesday from 3:30 - 7:00 p.m.

Enjoying The Fresh Baked Bread
They joined our market selling fresh cut herbs.
Fresh cut herbs are the best, If you have never tried them in one of your favorite dishes, You need to.
Herbs can be decorative, cosmetic, aromatic, medicinal and culinary. The term fresh-cut herbs is generally used to define those used to flavor our food and beverages. These culinary herbs are used fresh rather than dried. The flavor of fresh herbs has far more zest than dried. Some herbs do not retain their flavor when dried and must be used fresh.
Culinary Use:
As an herb, fennel leaves are used in French and Italian cookery, most commonly in sauces for fish, stuffing's, and in mayonnaise's. Its delicate anise flavor is valued for sausages, salads, breads and pastas. Fennel has a special affinity with fish and the dried stalks can be used as a bed for grilled fish or the seeds scattered sparingly on to bass, red mullet or sardines while barbecuing. It also adds a subtle flavor to creamed fish soup. Fennel is a popular flavoring with pork in Italy. Stir the chopped leaves into hot tomato soup to heighten its flavor; add them to meat loaves and polenta. Sprinkle them over salads or into marinades. Chopped fresh fennel does wonders for white bean salad. Fresh fennel leaves can be frozen for up to two months, packed in small bunches in plastic bags. Use them as you would fresh. Treat the hollow stalks as you would celery in cooking. Eat them raw or simmer the stalks in water or chicken stock as a vegetable to be served with butter. They can also be sautéed in garlic and olive oil. Add them to soups or stews. Let children use a fresh fennel stalk as a straw for sipping orange juice. The seed is not so widely used, but like many other seeds, it flavors breads and cakes, puddings, pastries and confectionery. It is an ingredient of Chinese Five Spice, sweet pickling spice and of certain curry powders, especially those of Sri Lanka. In India it is an ingredient of mukhwas, a ‘chew’ to aid digestion and sweeten the breath. Spicy Italian sausages, both sweet and sharp, contain the seed. It can be used in meat loves, in pickled shrimps and with mushrooms. It Italy it is used to impart a special flavor to dried figs. Several alcoholic drinks are flavored with fennel such as gin, aquavit and formerly, absinthe. A fennel tea – one teaspoon seeds to half pint of water infused—is a warming and refreshing drink. The root can be thinly sliced and simmered in chicken stock until tender for a simple fennel soup, adding salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste. The clusters of lovely yellow flowers in late summer and early fall are beautiful as a garnish.

FAIR GROVE, Mo. -- A wet and warm spring is helping produce a bounty of fruits and vegetables for area farmers. Fair Grove Farmers' Market not only helps local growers thrive but also helps folks eat fresh, including those in need.
For 10 years, the exchange has been selling homegrown goods. In that time, it has increased from a handful of vendors to dozens of sellers.
In spite of the heavy car and foot traffic, there's still an old-time feel in the air with vendors bringing in their goods from the trunk of a car. Folks hit the market for the freshest food available; there's no middle-man.
The fruits and vegetables are dug from the ground or picked from the vine and directly brought here to be sold. Buyers get quality food for the table.
"I bring in chemical-free wheat from Montana and I grind the wheat myself
We are so proud of our Market and how it has grown.
Peaches will be there Wednesday June 24Th. Blueberry's also.
The Fair Grove Volunteer Fire Dept Is doing Such a Great Job Out in the Heat Helping With Parking. Thank Them When You see them, for with out them out there it would be a night mare.
Hope to See You There.
